WSFL 2007 Week Seven Games:

The Gila Monsters went on the road to play a familiar foe. The nations #4 EAC stayed unbeaten and on track to a soon coming showdown with the #1 Snow. EAC won at home by beating NMMI 23-13.
Scroll down for story-stats.

Snow was host to the Bears from Phoenix and after a 23-0 half-time SC lead they finished off  PC 33-13.

Scottsdale hosted cross-town rival Mesa but failed to hold on at their home field falling 14-27

Pima, quite possibly the youngest team in JC football right now traveled to Yuma and could only watch as the Matadors rolled over them 35-0. It was the first time in awhile that the Aztecs did not score and it was the first time this year the Matadors won. Scroll down for story-stats.

After seven weeks of play, the real season begins in week eight. This is the week titles go on the line. It starts with Glendale traveling to Snow for a 1:30 game and a chance for the Gauchos to put themselves in the driver’s seat for a shot a national title. GCC will finish the season with a possible WSFL title showdown with EAC and the week before with Mesa, so a lot can happen. GCC vs. Snow is the nation’s game of the week.

EAC has a BYE then they travel to Mesa, then play Pima, then host Snow and finish with GCC. The toughest remaining schedule by far. For EAC to win a national title, the have to win all their remaining games. GCC or Snow can stay in the hunt with one loss on their record.

Mesa is a dark horse in the national and WSFL title picture, but if they run the table and Snow takes a loss, they become contenders for the national, WSFL and the right to host the Valley of the Sun Bowl. They still face Phoenix, EAC, Glendale and Western.

The WSFL is the place where all eyes in JUCO football will be focused for the rest of the season. Stay tuned.

NMMI Comes Up Short, Forth Ranked Eastern Arizona Holds on 23-13

Thatcher, AZ – A game that featured the nation’s top two rushing teams turned out to be a defense dominated football game as the fourth ranked Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters defeated the New Mexico Military Institute Broncos 23-13. Eastern Arizona got on the board first with a 30-yard field goal by Steven Holmes with 3:13 left in the first quarter. NMMI answered on their next drive.  Stephen Baca (So. QB, Justin, TX) kept the ball on an option run and ran 28-yards to the EAC 3-yard line.  Cortae Minor (So. FB, Henderson, NV) put the Broncos on top with a 3-yard touchdown run with 12:23 remaining in the second quarter.

EAC scored their first touchdown of the game when quarterback Pat Riley scampered 24-yards for the score. NMMI was forced to punt to EAC with 2:00 remaining in the half.  EAC’s drive looked to stall out as NMMI’s Hollan Fiu (So. LB, Pago Pago, AS) tackled the EAC receiver for a 12-yard loss all the way back to their 49-yard line.  A penalty by the Broncos extended the drive by giving EAC a first down.  Riley would break though for another big run down to the NMMI 1-yard line.  He would call his own number and score on a quarterback keeper as time expired in the first half.  The extra-point was good, giving EAC the 17-7 lead.

EAC opened the second half with a 51-yard field goal attempt.  The kick sailed wide left and the Broncos took over with good field position. NMMI got solid production from their passing game as Baca connected with Darrin Allen (So. WR, New Orleans, LA) for completions of 21 and 25-yards.  Kevin Perez (Fr. K, El Paso, TX) cut the EAC lead down to 17-10 with a 23-yard field goal with 8:50 remaining in the third quarter.

NMMI got another field goal from Perez with 32 seconds remaining in the third quarter when he converted on a 20-yard try to cut the lead down to 17-13.With 7:48 remaining in the game and the Broncos driving, EAC intercepted  Baca’s pass in the end zone to end NMMI’s threat.  EAC would tack on one more score with 2:09 remaining in the half to secure the victory. EAC moves to 7-0 on the season while NMMI drops to 1-5.  The Broncos will face  Pima Community College next Saturday at Colt Field in Roswell

YUMA, AZ The Aztec football team traveled to Arizona Western College Saturday night where the Aztecs suffered a 35-0 loss at the hands of the Matadors.

The Aztecs had another good night on offense but struggled to put points on the board. Starting quarterback Armando Pena, (FR, Yuma, Ariz., Cibola HS) threw well as he went 18-38 for a total of 221 yards. The Aztecs outgained the Matadors 221 to 96 through the air but the big difference in the game was the ground attack. The Matadors out gained the Aztecs 292-3, in net yards, on the ground.

Standouts for the Aztecs were Benjamin Minor, (SO, Tucson, Ariz., Sunnyside HS) who had 6 catches for 56 yards and Malcolm Shepherd, (SO, Tucson, Ariz., Sahuaro HS) who had 3 catches for 63 yards.
