WSFL 2007 Week Ten Games: Scroll down for story-stats.

Snow beat Scottsdale 22-9 in a game that should have been a mismatch based on the average margin of victory for the other SC. But perhaps the Badgers were looking past the Artichokes to the big game coming up when the Monsters from Thatcher vist them this coming Saturday. The Badgers remain #1 and now can prepare for the game of the year in the NJCAA.

Western beat the #18 Glendale Gauchos 19-18 in a game that surprised no one in the Matador program. This game was a record setter. It took nearly as long to play the game as it does to drive to Yuma and back, lasting over four hours. Yes, GCC lost five turnovers, but those are as much a part of the game as first downs and extra points and must be dealt with. The quote of the year and maybe the only quote of the year from Westerns Pryor as he summed it up best: “I’m proud of the men with the way they played.  Guys were hurt, guys stepped up, and we were shorthanded all night long and still won the game.  We’re just thankful.” Glendale ran for over 250 yards and should have won this one on the ground but they threw four interceptions and that was too much. The Matadors next play NMMI and the Gauchos go to Mesa to play for the right to host the Valley of the Sun Bowl. Scroll down for story-stats.

Eastern hosted Pima and won 45-14. The Gila Monsters did not look past the Aztecs but like the Badgers they got the chance to rest key players for their showdown with the other SC. It will be #1 vs #4 and the prize will likely be a first place national ranking a national title game for the winner. The irony is that EAC could be the best team in AZ this season and depending on how this one goes, NOT be eligible to play in the states own JUCO bowl game. That is the politics of population bases and long bus rides. You can thank former Western coach Butcher and his national power teams of yesterday for that.

The Phoenix College Bears got their second win 36-14 over New Mexico and now get ready to play Scottsdale at Hoy Field. Scroll down for story-stats.

Phoenix Rolls Past NMMI 36-14
Phoenix
, AZ
– New Mexico Military Institute and Phoenix College are not having the seasons that they wanted so both teams were eager to gain one in the win column.  NMMI had won the last two meetings between the teams with both games held in Roswell.  This time, the location was different, Phoenix, and the result was different, a 36-14 win for Phoenix.

The first quarter went by with neither team finding the end zone.  It was largely dominated by defense and special teams as neither team could gain any momentum on the offensive side of the ball.  Phoenix scored the first touchdown of the game with 4:09 remaining in the half.

Phoenix quarterback Corrdero Drummond found Chris Miranda on a 60-yard touchdown pass after it appeared that the play was over when Drummand apparently knelt on the ground to pick up the muffed snap.  The play continued and Phoenix wound up on top 7-0.

The Broncos wasted no time tying the score after quarterback Stephen Baca keep the ball on a keeper and raced 44-yards down to the Phoenix side of the field.  Darrin Allen took then took a hand off and scampered 22-yards.  Michael McIntosh would tie the score with his second touchdown of the season.

A 40-yard kick return set the Bears up with great field position and they retook the lead with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Robert Benjamin to Jordan Flores.  The extra point was blocked and Phoenix took a 13-7 half time lead. NMMI fumbled on their first possession of the second half and Phoenix capitalized with a 21-yard field goal.

After the Broncos failed to gain a first down on a fourth down try from the Phoenix 35-yard line, Phoenix drove the length of the field scoring on a 5-yard pass from Benjamin to Josh Felton.

Phoenix went up 29-7 after Darius Walton intercepted a pass from Shandon Augustus and returned it to the NMMI 5-yard line.  Akeelo Rhoden carried it in from 5-yards out for the score. Phoenix put the game out of reach with a long, time consuming drive ending with a Benjamin touchdown run to extend the lead to 36-7.

NMMI would add their final score with 5:33 remaining in the game when Baca kept the ball and ran in for a 5-yard score.  That would be all of the scoring as Phoenix held on to win 36-14.

NMMI falls to 2-7 on the season and 1-5 in the WSFL.  Phoenix now stands at 2-6 and moves ahead of NMMI in the WSFL standings with a 2-4 record.  NMMI will be at home next Saturday to take on Arizona Western College.  Kickoff is set for 1 pm.
