Week Two Glendale 34 Scottsdale 6

The game was the first in a two game series, it is the non-conference game. The one that counts the most will be in Scottsdale later this season. The game featured the latest uniform change for the Artichokes. They are now in Forest Green and Vegas Gold. What they need is a new mascot. How would you like to be the recruiting coach visiting a players parents and trying to get them excited about playing for something that is in a tossed salad...... Could be tough. Worse yet is the short version, you know, the way we call ASU the "Devils" and UofA the "Cats". For SCC it is, well, you figure it out.
Anyhow, name aside, the first half looked good for the Chokes. They were playing some tough defense and their scrambling, running, leaping quarterback was doing well. By the time they got to halftime the score was Glendale 11 and Scottsdale 6 leaving many wondering if the game the week before for the Gauchos did more harm then good. What the stats don't show however would be the two top running backs for GCC that were not playing. That can make a difference. Not scoring when you are near the goalline, that was bad for the men in black in the first half as well.

The good news for GCC is that SCC's defense from last season, one Louis Holmes is now playing for the UA Wildcats. The Artichokes have a talented QB, but being able to get to the sideline is good, but not on every play. At some point the running game and a controlled passing game need to be established.
Scottsdale came out ready to roll and did get some good return yards on kickoffs. A lot of Gaucho kickoffs. GCC got huge plays from their defense, and an interception and a long return, many tackles for losses and then their offense struck quickly. Nearly as soon as the second half started, it was over. the Gaucho stands were nearly full a the half and nearly empty early in the fourth quarter.

Next up for the Champs will be the Bears of Phoenix College at Phoenix College. There will be more Gaucho fans, then Bear fans on hand for this one. Too bad, because this will be a good game. Expect the Bears to give the Gauchos a run for it.........
Gaucho Notes: GCC Rushing Leaders: Markus Turner 11 carries for 55 yards, Eric Lee 8 carries 30 Yards and 3 TDs.
Defensive leader: Morris Wooten: 9 solos, 2 assists, 1 forced fumble and a 60 yard Interception for a TD.
Glendale turned it over to SCC 7 times, 5 interceptions and 2 fumbles.

Week One Glendale 36 Adams State 0 - 9/3/06 at Alamosa, CO
|
A road trip for the defending National Champs Glendale College Gauchos turned into a long hard day for the hometown Grizzlies JV team at Rex Stadium. Turnovers are the only thing they did well as they gave the ball to GCC four times. By the time the game was over, officially, the ASCJV had earned 102 total yards for the game while Glendale got a "passing practice" in as they spurned the run and threw for 278 yards. The good news for the ASCJV team is that their were more players and coaches in attendance then the 212 fans that showed up to watch.
The story for this game is best told by the scoring summary, or the Gaucho show. Steve Flores kicked a 35 yard field goal and John Means pulled in a 5 yard TD pass from Brenden Gaskins, the PAT kick failed and the first quarter ended GCC 9 ASCJV 0. The second saw Sean Boyd grab a 16 yard Gaskins pass, the Flores kick was good, then Nick Evans took a 1 yard Gaskins pass for a score and yep, Flores kick is good. The half ends GCC 23 ASCJV 0.
Third quarter scoring was none for either team. But in the fourth Markus Turner scored on a 10 yard run, Flores PAT good. Then with 57 seconds left Jerry Vaugh ran one in from 10 yards to end the scoring. Flores kick failed. GCC 36 ASCJV 0.
The Gauchos got an INT from Cameron Douglas which he carried for 15 yards. GCC also got sacks from Troy Bunting, Daniel Gurrola, Brad Yost and Diamond Johnson, one for each. The Gauchos QB Gaskins went 21 of 30 for 241 yards and 3 touchdowns with no interceptions.
I would list all the tackles by the Gaucho players but since everyone on the team go in on defense and tackled someone, I won't waste the three paragraphs. Same for the participation report. The stat that amazed me the most is that Glendale punted three times. THREE TIMES............. What were they? Sympathy punts????? Brumbaugh did the footing and had 128 yards for a 42.7 average. One went for 62 yards...???... Yep, ASCJV was surprised too....
One can only hope that the Gauchos got something out of such a long trip for a practice game. Why, because their crosstown rival the SCC Artichokes, now in Green and Gold will be coming to Glendale next weekend for a rivalry game. Should be interesting....................CU There.....................
