Tempe, AZ – The Arizona Cardinals Football Club today announced the team’s 2007 regular season schedule, which begins on Monday, September 10 when the team plays at San Francisco in the second half of ESPN’s nationally-televised double-header. After week one, all of Arizona’s remaining games are scheduled for Sunday afternoon kickoffs, though weeks 11-17 are subject to flexible scheduling (see “Flexible Scheduling” note below).
The Cardinals home opener at University of Phoenix Stadium comes in week two against Seattle. The team closes the month of September with a pair of games against AFC North teams. On September 23 the Cards will make their second-ever appearance at M&T Bank Stadium when they take on the Baltimore Ravens. The next week new Arizona head coach Ken Whisenhunt will take on his former team when the Pittsburgh Steelers make their first regular season visit to Arizona since 1997.
Arizona will open October with a divisional game at St. Louis (10/7). They then host the Carolina Panthers on October 14 before traveling to the nation’s capital to take the Washington Redskins on October 21. The team’s bye will come the following week between games seven and eight.
The Cardinals will return from the open date to face the Buccaneers in Tampa for the first time since 1997. It will be their first appearance at Raymond James Stadium, which opened in 1998. On November 11, the Detroit Lions visit Arizona marking the seventh consecutive season the two teams will have met in the regular season. The next week, the Cards travel to Cincinnati to take on the Bengals in a match-up of Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks from USC (Matt Leinart and Carson Palmer).
On November 25, the 49ers come to University of Phoenix Stadium for the first of back-to-back home games for the Cardinals. The next week, the Cleveland Browns will make just their third-ever regular season visit to Arizona and take on the Cardinals on December 2. Those two home games will be followed by a pair on the road. After playing at Seattle on December 9, the Cardinals head to New Orleans to take on the Saints.
The Cardinals regular season will conclude with consecutive home games. On December 23, Michael Vick and the Atlanta Falcons will visit University of Phoenix Stadium and the next week the Cardinals will face the St. Louis Rams in the regular season finale.
UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX STADIUM: The 2007 season will be the team’s second at University of Phoenix Stadium, a venue that was recognized by BusinessWeek as one of the 10 most impressive sports structures in the world. A year ago, the Cardinals sold out every game in their inaugural campaign and are expected to once again in 2007. The upcoming NFL season will conclude with Super Bowl XLII, which will be played at University of Phoenix Stadium on Sunday, February 3.
FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING: The NFL will play its second season under its flexible scheduling format, which provides the best match-ups to fans across the nation for the final seven Sunday night games on NBC (weeks 11-17). Twelve days before each game – or as few as six days in week 17 - the league will announce its Sunday night games. For the Cardinals, this means that every game after the November 11 game vs. Detroit is subject to flexible scheduling.
