stepped up against this competition-which is as good as anyone
in the country.
Given the injuries that we have had in the last couple of weeks,
we have some people gaining valuable court experience, and
having those outside hitters step up can only help that
experience.”

“It was absolutely a big win for us, and this is the way
it should finish when a team comes in here 0-10.
I was pleased with our tactical discipline, since when
you get an opponent that you think isn’t as good as you are,
that’s when you start making bad decisions, and trying to be
fancier than you should be.
We did a good job of staying tactically disciplined in
most positions for most of the game.”

Bengie Molina played for AWC from
1991-1992 and was a catcher and infielder.
Molina makes mark with oddball homer
Henry
Schulman Sunday,
September 28, 2008
Article
appeared on page C-5 of the San Francisco Chronicle
Yadier Molina won Game 7 of the 2006
National League Championship Series for St. Louis with a home
run. Jose Molina
hit the final home run at Yankee Stadium last Sunday. Now,
Bengie Molina can crow about a
landmark home run at family gatherings.
Elias News Bureau is still
researching whether Molina on Friday night became the first
major-leaguer to hit a home run and not score the run.
Molina hit a ball high off
the right-field wall and stopped at first base with an apparent
single. Emmanuel Burriss
pinch-ran for Molina before the umpires overturned their initial
call upon checking the replays and ruled that Molina's drive hit
the green metal roof atop the wall for a two-run homer. But they
also ruled that once Burriss touched first base, he became the
runner and Molina was out of the game. Burriss completed the
home run trot laughing all the way.
Manager
Bruce Bochy, hoping to keep Molina in the lineup, protested the
game.
"That's as freaky as
anything I can remember," Molina said. "I haven't been in a play
like that. I didn't know what was going to happen. I was
laughing because I thought, 'This is crazy.' I didn't see the
ball hit the edge like they said, but it did. I was excited."
Molina's only regret was
being unable to run the bases himself, "especially on a day like
yesterday, when they gave me that (Willie Mac) award. It would
have meant a lot to run the bases for the crowd." Umpire crew
chief Tim Welke
said the rules were clear: Molina was out of the game.
"Bochy wanted to reinsert
Molina into the game but he doesn't get another bite at that,"
Welke told a pool reporter. "We know the rules. Once a
pinch-runner touches a base, he's in the game whether he's put
in or not. ... You can't go back and revisit history."
When Burriss reached the
dugout, he was greeted with chuckles. When Burriss met
Aaron Rowand in the on-deck circle, Rowand said, "Way to hit it."
Snow's night:
J.T. Snow fulfilled his one-day contract. He appeared in the
starting lineup, led the Giants onto the field and warmed up the
infielders, who made a pact to bounce their throws. Snow picked
them all.
As
Matt Cain completed his warm-ups,
Travis Ishikawa ran onto the field to replace Snow - and was booed.
Those boos turned to cheers when Snow walked off the field. Snow
had taken batting practice and stunned himself by hitting line
drive after line drive. He even homered once, reaching the
arcade and winning a bet from broadcaster
F.P. Santangelo.
"I haven't hit since I
retired," Snow said. "I haven't hit on a major-league field like
that in two years. I was surprised I hit the ball on the barrel
consistently. I didn't think I could hit one out."
Briefly: Nomar Garciaparra
will manage the Dodgers
today, as Joe Torre
will continue a tradition that he had with the
Yankees of handing his team over to a veteran on the last day of
the regular season. - Henry Schulman
