Phoenix Brophy Prep's offense was not in championship
form Saturday night, but its defense was, helping to open
the season with a 16-6 victory over Las Vegas Bishop Gorman
in the Sollenberger Classic at University of Phoenix
Stadium.
It was a battle of state champions from the top
classifications in Arizona and Nevada, Brophy in Class 5A
Division I (12-2 record) and Bishop Gorman in Class 4A
(14-0), respectively.
The only defensive breakdown for Brophy, which has won
two titles in the past three years, was a 79-yard touchdown
run by Bishop Gorman QB John Huber in the first quarter.
Brophy limited Bishop Gorman to 125 total yards.
After tight end A.J. Steimel caught an 8-yard touchdown
pass from quarterback Beau Maggi with less than a minute
left in the game for Brophy, linebacker Brandon Bayardi
sealed the outcome with an interception at the Bishop Gorman
30.
Bayardi, defensive end Trent Murphy (blocked point-after
attempt) and linebacker Matt Padilla (key sack with about
six minutes left in the game) led the way.
It was a typical opening game in the early going, with
the teams trading penalty flags.
Brophy got help midway through the first quarter when the
Bishop Gorman long snapper sent the ball sailing over the punter's head and Brophy gained
possession at the Bishop Gorman 29.
Brophy took the lead five plays later when Max Leonesio
took a short pitch, moved to his left, cut back against the
grain a bit and barely got into the end zone. Alex Groutte's
extra-point kick made it 7-0 with 4:56 left in the first.
Bishop Gorman cut the deficit to a point when Huber
slipped outside to the left, moved down the sideline in
front of his own bench and outran the defense for a
touchdown.
Late in the first half, with the ball at its 1, Bishop
Gorman took a safety on fourth and long to make it 9-6.
Any hopes of expanding the lead before halftime
evaporated for Brophy on its possession after the safety.
Linebacker Trevor Stuart intercepted a pass by Maggi and
returned it to the Bishop Gorman 40 with 2:11 left in the
half.
Brophy gets two weeks off before returning to action
Sept. 5 at Chandler Hamilton.
