Cardinal Sees Red When Marooned in Desert

For the second week in a row the Sun Devils rolled past a foe. This time it was a visit by the Stanford Cardinal, a team with no mascot, led by a man that used to be a Wolverine. The Cardinal and their coach Jim Harbaugh were coming off a stunning win (36-28) over PAC-10 foe in the Oregon State Beavers. ASU had just finished practicing  (a 30-13 win) with the NAU Lumberjacks a Big Sky foe allowed the Devils to use only a couple of base formations and roll their entire inventory of players onto the field.

The Sun Devils came into this game ranked 15th nationally and few including I could see them losing to the Cardinal. I had them as two touchdown favorites.  In fact they won easily 41-17. When the game ended the Devils had run through and passed over every scheme Stanford could come up with. ASU QB Rudy Carpenter tossed for 345 yards and ASU ran for 127 to win by balance. Something they had to do and after the NAU game many questioned if they could.

The ASU defense had to slow down Stanford’s stud running back Toby Gerhard after he single handedly stumped the OSU Beavers with his career best game with 147 yards. They did and he only had 67 yards when the night was through. Stanford made it interesting, for moments here and there. But that was due to some penalties give the Cardinal some ops.

Tailbacks Keegan Herring and Shaun DeWitty saw action while Dimitri Nance carried the load with 75 yards on 18 totes. Michael Jones had 6 catches for 79 yards and one TD while Kerry Taylor had 92 yards and a TD with 5 grabs. Superstar Chris McGaha averaged 21.3 yards on 3 grabs for 64 yards.

All in all a workmanlike performance by a team that grows in talent and maturity with every game. Next up for the Sun Devils will be the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels.
